Hearing tests for all ages - from babies to teens
Learning to hear and listen properly are vital as part of your child’s social and educational development. It is important to address any hearing loss as soon as it is identified to prevent your child from experiencing learning difficulties.
When conducting comprehensive hearing tests for our kids, our audiologists ensure that all tests are age appropriate, and to:
- Accurately determine the location and cause of the hearing loss eg. middle ear infection.
- Measure the precise level and range of the hearing loss, so the correct solution can be identified.
- Identify the type of hearing loss.
All our hearing tests are non-invasive, with a range of testing procedures specifically designed for children and their ages / situations.
At what age can my child have a hearing test?
Any age! We support the hearing of all children. – from newborns right into late teens. We recommend getting a hearing evaluation if:
- You have a newborn, infant or toddler that wasn’t initially screened, or you think things may have changed since then
- You have a young child who may be exhibiting signs of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
- You have an older child with whom you believe is experiencing a level of hearing loss that is concerning or isn’t natural

Children’s Hearing & Auditory Processing Disorders (APD)
What is APD?
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) occurs when the brain has difficulty making sense of sounds. Children with APD may hear well in quiet environments but struggle in noisy settings like classrooms. This can impact learning, attention, and communication.
APD is often linked to how the brain’s sound-processing system develops. Children with a history of ear infections may be at higher risk. Around 3% of Australian children are affected, with boys more commonly impacted.
Signs to Look For
APD is typically diagnosed from age 7, but earlier signs may include:
- Difficulty listening in noisy environments.
- Trouble following instructions.
- Reading or spelling challenges.
- Poor understanding or confusion.
- Forgetfulness and disorganisation.
- Struggling at school.
- Easily distracted or fatigued.
Treatment & Support
While there is no cure, the right support can make a significant difference:
- Classroom and learning strategies.
- Practical coping techniques for daily life.
- Assistive listening devices.
- Listening training programs.
Children may also benefit from support from specialists such as speech pathologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, or paediatricians.
How We Help
At Neurosensory, we take a comprehensive, personalised approach. Our assessments are tailored to your child’s age and development, ensuring accurate results and the best possible outcomes.
Our APD assessment includes:
- Full ear health check (outer, middle, inner ear)
- Hearing threshold testing across environments
- Evaluation of multiple auditory and learning skill areas
Unlike many providers who assess only one area, we assess all relevant skills to ensure an accurate diagnosis and clear pathway forward for parents and teachers.
When to Book
Children develop listening skills over time. We recommend booking an APD assessment from 6 years of age onwards. If you think your child has an Auditory Processing Disorder, click here to request an appointment, or call Neurosensory on 1300 965 513.
